Smooth or crunchy

A few weeks ago I was texting back and forth with a friend and one of the questions she asked was, “How’s your day going? Is it smooth or crunchy?”

I absolutely LOVED this question! And I loved the peanut butter metaphor that it inspires.

I know there’s a debate on what type of peanut butter people prefer. Some love the silkiness of a smooth blend; others prefer more of a textured crunch on their bread or celery sticks. Neither is right or wrong - it’s simply personal preference and there are benefits to both.

Not all days are smooth and not all days are crunchy. Sometimes we can add a little honey to add some sweetness; other times we add bananas or celery so there’s extra texture. Sometimes we want it just “as is” or simply take it at face value / head on and eat it straight out the jar with a spoon. Some days we spread it thin and other days we lay it on thick. Some days it sticks to the roof our mouths and other times we need something to wash it down.

Sometimes we feel in the flow and smooth; other times we feel stuck and crunchy. Both are delicious parts of life. We need both the smooth and crunchy. The expansion and contraction. The yin and yang. Neither means there’s anything wrong - each is a different life experience that we tend to move between, back and forth. And we often get to choose how we want to ingest and digest the smooth and the crunch.

Ha! Who new peanut butter could be so profound?!

When you ask yourself the question: “Is your day smooth or crunchy?,” what comes up for you?
